Manatee aquarium requirements

Frontier lists the West Indian Manatee as a base-game aquarium animal. Its record contains both an aquatic-area field and a deep-swimming-area field: neither should be dropped or converted into a single tank-volume target.

Set up both water-space categories

  1. Build a staff-accessible aquarium with filtration. Connect the staff gate to a usable path and use the aquarium guide for water-network setup.
  2. Set temperature within 23–30°C. The official visible salinity label is Any Salinity; if sharing the tank, the other species’ salinity requirements still apply.
  3. Use the aquarium planner to compare the aquatic and deep-swimming fields separately. Do not add 150 m² and 20 m² into an assumed combined requirement; confirm how the game measures the built enclosure.
  4. After the manatee arrives, inspect its accessible space, terrain and welfare. Recheck after scenery placement, a birth or any population change.

Terrain: preserve the sand minimum

The 30% sand minimum is the first terrain threshold to check. Soil and rock each have a ceiling, so covering most of the floor in either can move the habitat outside the published range. Treat the values as allowed ranges, not three ingredients that must all be maximised.

Allowed terrain coverage ranges
TerrainAllowed coverage
Sand30–100%
Soil0–50%
Rock0–30%

Manatee group size and sex limits

The preferred population is 1–8. The male bachelor maximum and female bachelor maximum are both 8. In a mixed group, the record permits at most 7 males and 7 females, but the combined group must still remain at or below 8.

This makes a single manatee valid under the listed population field, while a larger breeding group needs room for calves. The record labels the mating system Promiscuous and the temperament Confident; neither label replaces the numeric population constraints.

Are any manatee tankmates confirmed?

The captured West Indian Manatee record lists no Neutral relationships and no Thriving relationships. That is an absence of listed pairings, not a universal claim that all other animals are incompatible.

A single-species aquarium is the straightforward starting plan supported by this page. If considering a mixed tank, compare the other animal’s record and check the live compatibility and welfare panels; do not assume matching temperature alone is sufficient. The full animal database keeps the two relationship categories separate.

Breeding: allow for one calf and a long interval

The game’s Easy difficulty label does not mean rapid population growth: the published maturity age is 7, and the interbirth field is 1.917 game years. These are game parameters, not real-world manatee care advice.

Before breeding a group already at eight animals, make a population-management plan for the calf. Review aquatic and deep swimming space again after the birth; the two additional-animal fields are separate, just like the two minima.

If manatee welfare is low

Compare with Ocean Sunfish care if deciding between aquarium projects: the sunfish has a different temperature range, a three-animal population ceiling and a deep-swimming field without the manatee’s separate aquatic-area entry.

  • Temperature: inspect the actual water reading against 23–30°C, not just the planned thermostat setting.
  • Space: check both aquatic and deep-swimming categories; a large-looking surface does not prove the deep-water field is satisfied.
  • Terrain: verify at least 30% sand, no more than 50% soil and no more than 30% rock.
  • Group: check the total population and sex composition, including the effect of recent births.
  • Other welfare: follow the individual animal panel for feeding, enrichment and health requirements not fully represented in this snapshot.
